Hair Professional opened in Maidstone’s King Street in 1979 and has been proudly offering on-trend, quality hairdressing ever since.

No one is better placed to view the ever-changing fashion for hair (and beauty) over the past 40 years than joint owner, Anthea Mitchell, whose parents Petros and Maroulla Papaspyrou began the business.

Anthea says: ‘I remember when mum and dad were choosing the interior look of the salon back then. They dragged me and my sister around everywhere searching for inspiration and the latest trends .’

Mr Papaspyrou retired in 1989 and he and his wife moved to Cyprus. He died in 2011, and his wife passed away earlier this year.

It was never inevitable that Anthea would take over the family business but her creative spirit won out and the salon has gone from strength to strength, with a strong social responsibility shown by all staff. Anthea works with the homeless at the Winter Shelter and also supports women with medical hair loss who require wigs and hairpieces. She is currently in training to become an ordained minister in the Church of England, a role which she intends to carry out alongside hairdressing.

Twenty years ago, Hair Professional added a beauty salon to provide an enhanced package of treatments and became a one-stop shop for all their clients’ hair and beauty needs.

To celebrate their 40 years in business, Hair Professional has had a make-over, masterminded by Anthea’s husband and co-owner, Philip Powell, and they are throwing a ‘Cocktails and Canapes’ event on 15th August from 7 – 9.30pm. Clients will be shown around the new-look salon and a new and exciting loyalty programme will be unveiled by the owners.

Anthea says, “We are very grateful to our army of loyal clients who have supported us over the years. We are proud to welcome the children and grandchildren of some of our longest-standing clients and have created a loyalty programme to say thank you to all of these people.”

Philip added, “There are very few salons who could boast such longevity and loyalty so we are almost uniquely placed to offer such a scheme to our clientele. We value them, and we know they value us; our openness and honesty, as well as the fact that we constantly upskill ourselves to offer them the best service that we can.”
